✅ Review: Dinosaur Eggs Oatmeal from Quaker

I’m cheating a little today, because I’m doing this Dinosaur Eggs Oatmeal review for one reason: It’s fun.

We certainly don’t have this in the UK – but I kinda wish we did!

Warm up Quaker® Dinosaur Eggs® and fun dinosaur shaped pieces appear right before your eyes! It’s a morning adventure filled with 34 grams whole grains per serving and the sweet flavor of brown sugar. Pro tip: Use a fork to stir your oatmeal, it works great for finding dinosaurs.

Clearly this is aimed at kids, but in the current situation I don’t think it matters all that much. Fun is fun, entertainment is entertainment.

And in a twist for a sugar flavoured breakfast cereal aimed at kids, there’s some education here too! Each packet of oatmeal comes with a couple of dinosaur facts or jokes printed on the sleeve.

Inside the pack of oats, you’ll find some Dinosaur Eggs. They’re small and pale in colour – but apply some hot liquid and the sugary shell melts away to ‘hatch’ out a dinosaur!

I admittedly struggled getting at the shapes in the porridge to photograph before they melted away, so I hatched one in boiling water – just for you!

Colours vary across red, orange and green. Shapes seem to be T-Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops.

If you manage to eat a dino before it melts, the texture is very much of old fashioned candy sticks/sugar cigarettes.

Thanks to the colourings in the dinos, the porridge goes a very funny colour once they’ve all melted. If it was given the title of a paint shade I’d call it “Dino Swamp”. That one is basically the fault of the green dinosaurs.

If you get a red or orange heavy mix, the colour comes out much more like it’s got jaundice or you’ve had a mild turmeric accident near your bowl.

As for taste and texture? The oats seem to retain more of their shape and texture than a similar product in the UK would. They stay a little bit bouncy chewy, which I’ve rapidly come to quite enjoy.

The flavour is clearly brown sugar as there’s more taste to it than having just a plain sugary-sweetness. There’s a hefty pinch of salt in here too, which isn’t my thing but the sugar helps cover it.

It’s definitely sweet, but it’s not too sweet. Especially for kids, this feels like the amount of sugar they’d ask for.

To be honest with you, it’s not the sugar I wish Quaker would tone down, but the salt. Side note: I bought a box of lower sugar instant oatmeal from Quaker, and it’s not nice. They’ve knocked the sugar down but it feels like the salt hasn’t changed a bit! Ugh.

Would I buy this again? Yes.

It’s fun, it’s kinda educational, it tastes nice and brought a smile to my face in trying to find hatched dinos. Plus let’s be honest, we could all do with a bit more joy at the moment – and if dinosaurs in my breakfast is how I’m coping, we’ll go with it.
