These British White Cheddar ‘Tortillas with Spirit’ came from a recent visit to Käfer in Munich!
Let’s start with the packet basics.
RECIPE No. 51 The SUPER SCOOP with creamy Cheddar cheese and CILANTRO. A rich WHITE CORN chip liberally scattered with GOLDEN LINSEEDS. | Manomasa.co.uk
Ingredients: Whole white corn flour, sunflower oil, golden linseeds (2%), buttermilk powder, natural flavourings (milk), rice flour, salt, sugar, whey powder (milk), dried cheese (including white cheddar) (milk), acid: citric acid, cilantro (coriander), parsley.
Each 25g portion is 119 kcal. Perhaps I should ignore the fact I destroyed the bag in one sitting whilst movie watching? Yes, yes I think that’s for the best.
I find Manomasa tortilla chips have a well defined, toasted corn flavour, which I quite like. This particular variant has a very slight hint of nuttiness from the linseeds in the mix too, but the real reason to eat them is the light cheddary flavour. It’s mild, creamy and rich with a touch of sweetness.
I happen to think the creaminess here balances out the toasted corn flavour, which can sometimes head towards being ‘over toasted’ when you’ve munched through a handful of chips. I’m not sure if that’s the influence of the linseeds here or just the nature of Manomasa products. The cheese flavour builds the more you munch, though I will say that flavour distribution doesn’t always seem even.
Texture wise, these guys deliver a nicely satisfying crunch. They’re not brittle, as you can tell from the pictures above – there’s a lot of whole chips in there and not an awful lot broken. They’re also a nice oval shape, perfect for a decent scoop – unlike something more triangular in shape, which tend to cut through a dip rather than catch it. Strangely, this flavour isn’t always easy to find on shelves – but I’ve bought it before and I’m sure I’ll buy it again!
