I found this organic, gluten free and dairy free snack bar from Rawbite in a German Bio-Supermarkt. Is this Vanilla Berries bar a success?
When I was reviewing the Apple Cinnamon bar I wondered whether I’d made a mistake in trying it first. After all, a Vanilla Berries bar – no matter how good it is – is going to struggle to live up to an Apple and Cinnamon combo.
And the answer? Ehhh… Maybe.
The bar contains: Fruit 57% (dates, raisins), Nuts 32% (almonds, cashews), Berries 10,5% (cherry, cranberry, mulberry), Vanilla 0,5%. The bar comes in at around 200 kcal per 50g portion – and obviously it’s vegan friendly.
Off the bat, there’s a sweet and datey raisin scent. It’s a much firmer bar than the Apple, with a far less fudgy squish to it. Without the other variant for comparison, I’d say this was a firmly pressed bar with a slightly dry texture that breaks into chunks easily.
The nuts are in plentiful supply again, giving the bar a fair crunch and nibbly-nutty texture.
In the flavour department, it starts out as a date and raisin sweetness. Again, it’s that “shove a handful of raisins in your mouth” taste – and I was feeling a bit let down. Where were the berries?
And then one hit – sharp and tangy and fruity. As it mellowed out, I found another bite of tart berry fruitiness.
This bar is far more nutty than I’d anticipated, with a berry flavour that builds. My feeling was that the vanilla part is really neither here nor there. With the first bite I was disappointed, but by the end I was quite happy and felt the flavour was pretty much as advertised. It just wasn’t executed as I’d expected.
It contains 10.5% berries and I actually liked the way the flavours from them remained individual. Because the bar doesn’t have a homogenised and generic ‘berry puree’ flavour, it feels somehow more natural and less processed. Plus it’s fun getting that contrast of sweet raisin and date against a sharp berry.
I liked this fruit and nut bar, though (as expected) not as much as the Apple Cinnamon. I do like this product range and would happily try more from the brand – but I’d love to see Rawbite make a Gingerbread themed bar – hint hint, Rawbite!
