America seems to have lots and lots of options in the “long life cake” category. I’m trying out Tastykake’s Powdered Sugar Mini Donuts.
Last week we had a packet of Hostess Powdered Donuts – and I’m not saying that 2020 is turning me into a “sitting at home in my comfy joggers and eating all donuts” sort of person (though it’s definitely a contributing factor!) – and we ate them so quickly I didn’t grab photos for the blog.
This week I did better. We went for Tastykake… which I assume means they’re supposed to be Tasty Cakes. It’s not subtle, but that’s probably part of the charm.
These little donuts are supposed to be available in a few different flavours, but my local store doesn’t seem to stock a variety. In any case, it’s always a good idea to start with the basics before branching out. “Powdered Sugar” it is!
As you’d expect, there’s no real surprises here.
Little donuts are covered in a heavy coating of what feels like a cornflour and icing sugar mixture. The donut itself is slightly chewy, a little dense and very vanilla forward.
It’s a bit powdery in the finish and there’s a sort of claggyness that appears with the remnants of the donut lingering in my teeth. I’m actually going to blame that on the powdery coating rather than the dough itself.
Perhaps surprisingly these things aren’t particularly greasy. Which is great, because I hate a greasy donut. They also seem more like donuts than cakes in texture, which gets them a big thumbs up.
They’re about the right level of sweet for me and I do actually like them.
Obviously the ingredients list looks like a bit of a horror show. To be truthful I haven’t been able to make myself read through the entire list. Partially because it’s a bit late now, I’ve eaten the things and partially because it looks like the brand does a Pumpkin Spice flavour in the fall and I don’t want to put myself off trying them. See what I did there? Using ‘fall’ instead of ‘autumn’. I’m trying to adapt, y’all!
Anyway, I think I’d get these again when I have a craving for something trashy and cake-like. They’re not bad!
