It’s a while since I managed to get a cereal on the blog, but I’m quite excited to share this Strawberry Oatie Mix-Up from Quaker Kids with you.
If you’re an adult that thinks anything with a “for kids” label means it isn’t for you, be prepared to be wrong… because this is a delicious breakfast. Even for someone like me, in their mid-thirties.
I managed to snag it at Ocado on an introductory offer at £1.37. Full price is £2.75 and the flavours available are either Strawberry or Chocolate.
Clearly I went with strawberry.
Ingredients are: Wholegrain Rolled Oats (38%), Maize Flour, Wholegrain Wheat, Glucose Syrup, Sunflower Oil, Sugar, Oligofructose, Freeze Dried Strawberries (2.5%), Carrot Powder, Rice Flour, Wheat Flour, Maize Glucose, Honey, Raising Agent (Potassium Bicarbonate), Antioxidant (Tocopherol), Salt, Natural Flavouring, Colour (Plain Caramel)
First impressions are so good here. There’s plenty of variety in the cereal with lots of little bright red bits of strawberry popping through too. It looks great.
It gets even better with the sniff test – to me it smells of strawberry milkshake! And that’s without adding any milk to the mix.
Flavour wise, this really isn’t sweet at all. The strawberry has a little bit of tartness to it, but it’s moderated by oaty flavours and added milk.
I really like the oaty flavour in the cereal, with the animal shapes being airy crisp in texture. They’re a little bit confusing to me as to what they’re supposed to be, but I get the elephant and squirrel easily enough.
Sweetness here comes from the chunky looking clusters. However don’t expect to be hit with ‘sugar’. The balance here is for a fairly gentle sweetness overall.
The clusters aren’t difficult to break apart, nor are they harsh on my teeth – but they add a lovely bit of textural variety. They get a big thumbs up from me.
If you happen to take your time with cereal, you’ll be treated to your milk turning a bright ‘strawberry milkshake’ pink colour. Definitely fun and a feature I’m sure kids will love.
I can taste the salt in here on occasion, but other than that I have zero complaints. I basically love this product.
Quaker, if you’re reading this, please start working on a Blueberry version!
