I know I’m in America and I’m supposed to be reviewing American things, but I just can’t help myself. I spotted these Lemon flavoured Austrian Loacker wafers in my Indian food import store and couldn’t resist.
The fruity, fresh and fruity lemon cream filling is made using real lemon juice and essential oils from Sicilian lemons. These fruits, pampered by the sun, give this wafer creation its distinctive sweet and sour flavour.
Now I have actually seen Loacker products in a couple of USA shops now. They’re stocked in places like Whole Foods, 7 Eleven and even Walmart. They’re not massively unusual to find. I’ve seen bags and bags of Quadratini in Central Market and an Asian import store too. Wafers, it seems, are popular.
I do wish Loacker had used a native English speaker to run over the text here though. There’s no need for that justified layout with words split up over two lines.
I know it’s common in German (with words as long as your arm, it’s basically a necessity), but it’s not quite the same in English.
Anyway, these wafers. They’re so SO addictive!
It’s basically two light, airy and crispy wafers, held together by the most wonderful lemon cream. The filling is full of bright, real lemon juice flavour. It’s tart and zingy and just about sweet.
All that deliciousness sits against a rich, full cream flavoured background.
It feels like whole cream and lemons have been smushed together as a filling. There’s a fatty quality to the flavour that sits on your tongue and tastes really good, natural and like it’s made with real ingredients – rather than a list of chemicals and sugars.
The quality of the wafers stands out too. My brain instantly went: “These are so much better than the ones Hershey’s use in Kit Kats!”.
Anyway, I loved these and would highly recommend. I know they’re supposed to go with ice cream but I’ve just been eating them straight from the biscuit tub!
