✅ Review: Knoppers from Storck

Knoppers. Sounds rude, doesn’t it? Well it’s not, you filthy minded people! (Alright, alright. I’m talking about myself, clearly…) These slices are hugely popular and are even being released in the UK, so let’s see what all the fuss is about!

Ever since Knoppers was launched in 1983 in Germany, the milk-hazelnut wafer has been popular: Crispy baked wafers, delicious milk, and tasty nougat cream fillings perfected by crunchy pieces of roasted hazelnuts.

Product Review: Knoppers from Storck, Germany – A crispy wafer slice with layers of milk creme, hazelnut and chocolate.

Though these quotes are taken from the UK website, I have the feeling it’s not been through a native English speaking translator…

Whether at work, at school or whilst on the road – take a relaxing break with a crispy, tasty Knoppers – it peps you up and makes you feel light-hearted just that easy.

Just that easy?

Well, I have to say their ambitions for this tiny little wafer snack are high indeed. Marketing nonsense, if ever there was.

This Knopper (which I’m sorry is just so close to ‘knockers’ I can’t help but giggle) weighs in at 25g with 547 kcal per 100g. It’s descriped as a filled waffle slice with 30.4% milk creme filling and 29.4% nugat creme filling. Contents obviously include milk, nuts and gluten.

On opening it smells milky and nutty. There’s a decent wafer used here too – it’s crisp and light, with a gentle cereal flavour. I’ll be honest with you though, I don’t find wafers exciting in the least.

Moving on, the filling is sweeter than I’d have expected, with a decently hazelnutty chocolate flavour. It includes a fair few little nutty nibbly bits too!

Now as hazelnut chocolate can be a rather overpowering thing, you’ll be pleased to know I think the milk layer comes through well. At least, from my point of view the flavours are balanced out nicely.

Though it’s light and crispy, sweet, milky and nutty… It’s a bit too sweet for me overall and I can’t quite see what the hype is about. I mean, I’d rather have a KitKat.

That being said, if you’re a fan of wafers and hazelnuts I imagine this is rather a good example of how to do one successfully. I’d market it more at children and lunch boxes than women working in offices (“Hey, hey – she’s got her Knoppers out!”) – but if office based women like Knoppers, who am I to disagree?

Oh, and judging by the image on the front of the Knoppers packet, I had the thing upside down. The chocolate covered waffle is actually on the bottom in my photos! Not that I imagine it makes a blind bit of difference to the taste… but who knows!
