Review: Gran Pasticceria Cappuccino from Loacker

Product Review: Gran Pasticceria Cappuccino from Loacker |

I’ve been on a bit of a “coffee everything” kick recently. Actually, I’ve been eyeing up these Gran Pasticceria Cappuccino flavoured chocolate coated wafers from Loacker for weeks. It’s no surprise that I finally caved…

Via the magic of Google Translate…

Il Grande Amore for coffee lovers … Enjoy a piece of “Dolce Vita” in original Italian style! Succumb to the creamy temptation of wafer-thin waffles, a delicately melting coffee cream and a noble coat of the finest light milk chocolate with a decor of white chocolate. | Loacker

First off, based on this cover I’d expected something sized more like a Penguin or a Tim Tam biscuit. These Loacker ones are MUCH smaller than anticipated. I think it’s the size of the cappuccino cup that threw me…

I must say though that they’re packaged rather nicely. The plastic insert presents the chocolate coated wafers in a fairly fancy way and I didn’t note any damage from transit. Good job! Initially there’s a nice, light coffee smell coming from them which I take to be a good sign.

Biting into one and all is forgiven on the size front. They’re lightly, airly crisp with substantial layers of cappuccino flavoured cream. It’s thick with a mouth coatingly thick rich cream flavour and texture to it, with a gentle coffee undertone.

There’s a slight tang to the flavour which is taking my brain to the Tiramisu Loacker wafer though there’s no mascarpone listed in the ingredients. Instead, there’s a lot of milk powders, which I’m assuming accounts for the rich and creamy flavour – along with the tang.

Nut allergy sufferers beware – this contains hazelnut. God knows why but I suspect it’s added depth to the chocolate along the way, though I can’t pick it out as a unique flavour. As a rule of thumb, expect hazelnut to be in every chocolate product you find in Germany. Even Milka. Always double check the label!

These are actually really, really nice. Though mild on the coffee I rather enjoyed the “full fat cream” experience. The flavour and texture here is great – rich but light. I suppose I have to tell you that we practically inhaled this pack in (almost) one sitting. Even the other half devoured them – high praise indeed!
