Fruity liquorice panda faces from Katjes look cute, but how do they taste?
I’ve been keeping a lookout for these Katjes Wunderland sweets. I’ll admit, it’s the unicorn design that’s got me interested, but try as I might I just cannot find them for sale! They’re all over instagram though, so I know they’re not mythical… just elusive. Like a real unicorn? Uhhhhh… Anyway, snack stalking aside, I found something new! Fruchtlakritz Tappsy.
I’ve reviewed the normal black gummy and white foamed sugar panda faces before and rather liked them, so I was looking forward to trying these. Tappsy sweets are made using natural colours and without animal gelatine, making them suitable for vegetarians. The gummy panda faces are flavoured with liquorice, lemon, strawberry and cherry.
The soft, chewy, gummy texture is the same across both the liquorice and fruit sections, so they’re actually very samey to eat. The liquorice portions are just the same as in the original product too. There’s a strong, powerful liquorice flavour, whilst the fruit flavours don’t seem to be fully realised. With the exception of the lemon (which fares slightly better), they just don’t come anywhere near the strength of flavour required to fully balance out against the liquorice.
If I’m honest, I’m a bit disappointed with these… There’s just something missing without that flavour and texture contrast that the original version does so well. I think if the fruity flavours here had been infused into the foamed sugar base the white sections of the original used, these would be a winner. The liquorice needs that neutralising, mellowing influence of the milky sections. The texture contrast makes for a much more enjoyable experience too. As they are, these fruity liquorice Tappsy arn’t my cup of tea. If you like a strong liquorice flavour though, they might be yours!
