Erdnuß Locken, or Peanut Curls in English! This is a huge bag… But what are they?
Let’s start with the bag. Clearly this is some sort of puffed snack and it contains freshly ground peanuts. The bag is huge! It contains 250g of these things…
ErdnußLocken are a truly irresistible treat to munch on. Whether in a quiet moment or together with family and friends … they are so wonderfully crispy on the outside and yet they melt in your mouth. And just between you and me: that great peanut taste will charm a smile onto everyone’s face! | Lorenz
There’s lots of information on the bag in German: Peanuts of the best quality are used, freshly ground for a unique natural peanut flavour. They’re crisp, airy and delicious. They’re produced without preservatives.
Helpfully the packet also contains a list of ingredients in English:
Corn snack with freshly ground peanuts. Ingredients: corn semolina, peanut kernels (33%), palm oil*, salt, tomato powder, flavouring, yeast extract powder. May contain gluten and milk. *Certified sustainable palm oil.
I was so curious about these! I thought they looked like peanut flavoured Wotsits. I wasn’t even sure if they were going to be sweet or salty… or both! Open the bag, take a deep inhale and… it smells like peanut butter! Popped one in my mouth and I’ve very helpfully noted my first response to these as: “Bizarre!”
Can I expand on that? Well, yes. But they did have me pretty confused to start with!
As the pack smelt peanut buttery, I thought there’d be a sweet edge to the puffs. I was wrong, they’re salty! Not strongly salty like a pack of Ready Salted crisps but salty all the same. I guess the best way to describe it is like… if you could take a bag of roasted and salted peanuts and somehow puff those peanuts up. Make them airy and light.
I know the ingredients lists Tomato Powder but I can’t honestly taste it. There’s a gentle corn flavour from the snack itself, peanut and salt. That’s basically it for me.
The puffed corn is crunchy and light but the peanut flavour isn’t static. It develops as you chew through them, finishing with a peanutty salinity and a creaminess reminiscent of peanut butter. Not a thick, Sun-Pat sort of peanut butter though but one of the natural ‘nothing added’ kind. Like Wotsits, they start to gum up in your teeth the more you munch.
These peanut puffy things are definitely unique and quite interesting. They’re so odd but they’re bizarrely addictive. I’d love to know your thoughts if you’ve tried them!
