This bar of Cadbury Dairy Milk Mint Crisp is no ordinary bar… at least, not to those of us in the UK. This bar comes from Ireland!
As per the packet description, this is “Mint flavoured milk chocolate with honeycombed granules (12%)”.
The ingredients list: Milk**, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Glucose Syrup, Cocoa Mass, Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea), Emulsifiers (E442, E476), Flavourings.
**The equivalent of 426ml of Fresh Liquid Milk in every 227g of Milk Chocolate. Milk Chocolate: Milk Solids 20% minimum, actual 23% , Cocoa Solids 20% minimum.
People say that Irish Cadbury Dairy Milk is entirely different to the stuff widely available in the UK. I wasn’t entirely convinced that would be the case, but I was prepared to give it a try.
Oh my word, how right they are. This stuff is completely different.
This tastes like Cadbury Dairy Milk used to.
I’m not quite sure what’s going on, but I’m prepared to bet some money on the milk supply. Whether you guys think I’m crazy or not, the taste of this chocolate reminded me of when my Nan would get local milk delivered in glass bottles. The sort with the thin foil lid that birds pecked through in the winter, to get at the fatty cream in the bottle neck.
It’s that very distinctive whole cream flavour that I’d swear I could taste in this.
It also wouldn’t surprise me if the Irish plant has older machinery in use (given that the English locations have reportedly had their facilities upgraded), which I’m sure affects the development of the chocolate.
Beyond the strikingly different base chocolate flavour, we should mention the ‘Mint Crisp’ part. On opening the packet there’s a very minty scent. You’d not mistake this chocolate bar for anything else. The chocolate is liberally studded with tiny honeycomb pieces, giving it a light and airy crunch under the smooth Dairy Milk.
Another thing I really liked about this bar is the shape. This is more like how Cadbury bars used to look! With proper squares. I know that shouldn’t really matter but it does. It feels right and nostalgic, somehow.
I’m going to have to admit that I liked this Cadbury bar. It’s actually the first Cadbury Dairy Milk product I’ve enjoyed in quite some time. I’d really love to get my hands on some more of the proper Irish stuff. This bar came from our trip to Cheshire Oaks, but I’ll certainly keep my eyes peeled for more!
