Breakfast time! This time we’re trying Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios from General Mills.
In the UK we don’t really have “flavoured” products. However Cheerios in the USA come in LOTS of flavours, including Toasted Coconut, Blueberry, Maple, Peach, Apple Cinnamon, Banana Nut, Fruity, Frosted and even (seasonally) Pumpkin Spice. Yes, I will be hunting those down, thanks for asking.
In Germany I loved the Google-salad translations from product pages. Here in America I’m finding the marketing style interesting.
Two flavors. Too awesome. Real cocoa and peanut butter…for breakfast? Oh-yeah. Your kids will love the delicious flavor combination and you’ll love that every bite is packed with the whole grain goodness of Cheerios. Now mornings can leave everybody smiling.
Ingredients: Whole Grain Oats, Sugar, Peanut Butter (peanuts, sugar, monoglycerides, peanut oil, salt, molasses, corn starch), Dextrose, Corn Starch, Corn Syrup, Canola Oil, Salt, Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Caramel Color, Tripotassium Phosphate, Natural Flavor. Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) Added to Preserve Freshness.
Opening the bag and the peanut butter scent hit me straight away.
First bite? Well there’s plenty of salt in this, along with a defined peanut butter flavour. It’s like the hoops have been coated in a peanut butter powder. Over time, and in milk, the saltyness becomes less “in your face” and there’s a pretty decent balance between upfront nut and the background flavour of cocoa powder.
I wouldn’t say they’re “chocolate” exactly. They’re lacking a sort of chocolatey richness, but the cocoa flavour is still good. For me they’re peanut butter forward with a mild cocoa underneath. The aftertaste really seems to deliver on the peanut butter flavour too. It comes through nicely once you’ve put the spoon down.
As for the texture? Well it’s what you’d expect: a light cereal hoop with an oaty and slightly mealy texture.
Overall, I think this cereal is exactly what it’s supposed to be!
