If you’re a fan of liquorice, this chocolate coated variety from Lakrids needs to be on your shopping list!
Over Christmas one of the Munich based Facebook pages I follow posted a competition to win some gourmet chocolate coated liquorice. I didn’t enter but I did notice the striking packaging; three small tubs with beautifully designed labels in a sleek black box. It screamed ‘gourmet’, ‘exclusive’ and ‘expensive’. It might be a bit odd but I do appreciate some nice design work – I once stopped Mr. E3 to show him a beautifully done spice advert in a cooking magazine. Each to their own, eh?
Roll forward a couple of months and I walk past a Lakrids branded stall at Stuttgart market hall. A cherry pink, glittery ball of chocolate coated liquorice found its way to me. I’d say it was destiny but I’m pretty sure the friendly lady on the stall knows the only way to get people to buy liquorice at this price is to have them love it first. Love it I do.
The pink glittery malteser sized ball was Cherry Choc Coated Liquorice, a 2016 exclusive flavour. The glitter gets everywhere! There’s absolutely no way to ninja into the tub for a sneaky treat without leaving evidence all over your fingertips and anything you touch thereafter. On the other hand, in my household there’s no way to have any sneaky liquorice as Mr. E3 hates the stuff. The tub contains 150g of gluten free chocolate coated liquorice (including 66% Belgian white chocolate, with 2.2% raw liquorice and 1% freeze dried cherry). There’s also this…

There’s no immediate flavour as the glittery chocolate hits the tongue but a mild creamy white chocolate taste soon develops as you bite through the chocolate. The light cherry flavour is subtle but noticeable as the chocolate melts and thanks to the use of freeze dried cherries, it doesn’t taste like a cherry chapstick. It’s subtle but pleasing, finishing with a smooth light liquorice flavour. The liquorice itself is chewy but soft, more like ‘Australian’ liquorice than something you’d find in a Bassett’s bag. Put it this way, it won’t hurt your jaw if you try to demolish the whole tub in one go.
The Blackcurrant Choc Coated Liquorice uses the same mild sweet liquorice at the centre and same creamy quality white chocolate to coat it with (66% Belgian white chocolate, with 4% freeze dried blackcurrant and 2.2% raw liquorice). The flavours however are worlds apart. This punches you in the tongue from the get go thanks to all that gorgeous tart freeze dried blackcurrant. These are, in a word, amazing. They’re totally worth all the little blackcurrant seeds getting stuck in your teeth because the flavour is just that good. They’re tart and zingy and as the white chocolate melts the fruity flavour becomes really fresh and juicy. Perhaps because it’s a flavour combination I’ve grown up loving, this strikes me as a better matched set of flavours.
