I’m not sure where I picked up these Cacao Protein Wonderballs from Missfits. I think it might have been Sainsbury’s (or possibly Ocado?). Did I like them? Let’s find out!
If I was going to write this review like an end of year school assessment, it would probably go; “A good solid start. Needs to work on refining the final coursework submission.”
By that I mean, despite appearances, there’s nothing really bad about them. They’re fine, to a point. But they don’t graduate into A grade territory for me.
First impressions; they smell like dates. There’s something a little earthy and a bit of cocoa about them, but other than that, pretty reasonable.
They’re hard to the touch but firmly squishy to eat.
As I’d guessed from the scent, the taste is mostly date – and something a little… powdery, musty-card-like. I’m struggling with how to describe that secondary flavour, but it’s clearly the protein bits in the mix.
Now actually I’ve had worse, but the protein crispy powdery texture is a little too obvious to me. Overall though my biggest issue is that they’re just so so sweet.
In addition to the dates they’re clearly based on, the recipe for these includes honey too. It’s just too much for me, so I’m sorry for that, but for people who like their dates extra sweet? I think these would be fine.
HOWEVER. Yes, this is a big ‘however’. I think I managed to pick up an old version of this recipe… because looking at the Missfits website, the bag has had a revamp, there’s a ‘Great Taste Award’ sticker on there and, importantly, the ingredients listed have changed slightly.
My bag: Protein Crispies (Milk Protein Concentrate, Rice Flour, Salt), Dried Dates, Honey, Cacao Powder (5%), Whey Protein (Whey Protein Concentrate (Milk), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin)), Natural Vanilla Flavouring, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Coconut Oil.
Online: Dates, Protein Crispies (Milk Protein Concentrate, Rice Flour, Salt), Dried Dates, Whey Protein (Whey Protein Concentrate (Milk)), Honey, Cacao Powder (6%), Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Emulsifier: Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Vanilla Flavouring.
Ultimately then, I think I’d give another flavour from the range a try, but I wouldn’t pick these up again.
