Butterblätter from Bahlsen. With 25% butter, these leaf shaped cookies are described as “crispy and tender” (or delicate, whichever way you’d like to read it really). Having recently fallen in love with the Kägi Toggenburger Alpine butter cookies, I was game for a bit of competition. Would Bahlsen kick Kägi off the butter biscuit top spot?
These leaf shaped biscuits are very pretty, very thin little things and they hold up surprisingly well on a quick dunk in a brew. They’re just so delicate though that they’re very easy to inhale. I mean, consume. Don’t snort biscuits! One minute, you’ve got a freshly opened packet. The next? All gone! (Yes, almost literally – though I did at least have some help demolishing the box!)
They’re coated in a very light and thin sugar glaze, with the biscuits themselves having a light, crisp and slightly crumbly texture. Despite that sugar glaze, they’re not over sweet and the butter flavour is pretty clear. With a butter content at 25%, you’d certainly hope to be able to taste it!
Oddly, for me at least, when I read the ingredients I discovered they contained ground almonds. Entirely news to me as I didn’t recognise the flavour in the biscuit, whether munching on its own or with a brew. It’s probably fair for me to say that the almond flavour isn’t defined or pronounced.
So yeah, they’re pretty and they’re buttery… but they’re also light and insubstantial. I dunno about you, but I like a biscuit to be satisfying. Given that they’re just so light and airy, they don’t really hit that “comforting biscuit” note for me… They’re good (of course), but they’re still not as good as Toggenburgers. On the other hand, if you’re after something pretty and dainty, delicate and tasty? These Butterblätter would be a great choice.
