Apple Pie. Yum! I love apples in cake and pies and desserts… and sausage rolls… But mostly here we focus on the sweet things. So today, we’ve got an Apple Pie inspired Lärabar and a confession.
A confession? Well… I actually bought two different kinds of Lärabar on a recent visit to American Heritage in Munich. The first was Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and I devoured it just moments after leaving the shop. I was hungry! But I thought I’d mention it as the bar was wonderful. Deeply peanut buttery with plenty of squidgyness and a good sprinkling of delicious chocolate chips. I mention delicious because American chocolate is somewhat debatable… But this bar was seriously very good. I’m gonna have to try and import some when I’m back in the UK!
Now then, on to the Apple Pie bar.
Just like Grandma’s and under 200 calories, this Apple Pie contains a half cup of fruit and 5 grams of fiber. Not too sweet, and spiced with cinnamon and raisins, Apple Pie also has almonds and walnuts for a nutty finish. | Lärabar
My first impressions are good. The bar smells like cinnamon and is absolutely packed with nuts. With a nicely simple ingredients list, there’s one thing that stands out to me – see if you can spot it? Dates, Almonds, Unsweetened Apples, Walnuts, Raisins and Cinnamon.
Yup, it’s the unsweetened apples and this is a genius move from the product development team. They give the bar a strong, tangy and unmistakable apple flavour. There’s some date sweetness in the bar (of course) but it isn’t over sweet thanks to those sharp apples. And I love it.
For me, it’s not quite “apple pie”. Yes, there’s apple and yes there’s cinnamon. It’s a fabulous bar – but it’s more “Apple Pie Filling” to me. There’s no real pastry approximation going on here and though nuts add crunch, there’s not a ‘toasty, crumbly, pastry’ quality to them.
I’d be very happy to buy this one again – but (unusually for me) I actually liked the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip one more! Compared to that, this Apple Pie bar was a bit more dense with less squidgyness going on. And that makes sense – but as I sit here typing this, I really want another Peanut Butter one.
