Anything with both apple and cinnamon flavours should be a winner, shouldn’t it? That’s what led me to pick up this bag of Apple Cinnamon Rice Crisps from Quaker.
It was all going really well.
I like Quaker, I like Quaker products. I like the packaging, I like rice cakes, I love apple and cinnamon flavours…
But I absolutely hate these Apple Cinnamon Rice Crisps.
What do you get when you combine the flavors of tangy apple with tasty cinnamon and crispy crunchiness? Totally delicious rice snacks that will leave you speechless – mostly because your mouth will be full.
They left me speechless alright, but with disappointment.
Opening the packet and they look nice enough. They’re thin and crisp but they’re very obviously coated in a shiny, sugar-like glaze.
I didn’t spend much time eating these because I quite honestly couldn’t.
What I did figure out was that the apple and cinnamon flavour is good. I like the texture of the crisp. It all seems fine – until you get to the end of the chew.
In that moment, as I was finishing eating the crisp, an overwhelming artificial sweetener flavour hit me. It’s strong and unnecessary and entirely ruins what could have been a really nice snack. These things are really sweet and they don’t need to be – that bucket-load of sweetener just ruins the whole thing for me.
Obviously mileage and tolerance to artificial sugar alternatives will vary on this one. But I ate five crisps then threw the rest in the bin – and that hurt, because food is so expensive in America that I just hate throwing something away.
They come in loads of flavours: Sweet Barbecue, Caramel, Cheddar, Chocolate, Kettle Corn, Buttermilk Ranch, Sea Salt & Peppercorn, Sour Cream & Onion, Sweet & Spicy Chilli, Sea Salt & Lime, Butter Popcorn and Buffalo Ranch.
Not all of these flavours contain those awful sweeteners – so YES, I would try the product again, but after paying very close attention to the ingredients list.
